Creative Translation Workshop – Spanish – Key Stage 3-4:
The aim of this workshop is to use an extract from Jane Eyre – in both English and Spanish – as inspiration to produce a protest poem. The workshop includes an introduction to protest poetry through two short videos, the literal translation of a Spanish version of Jane Eyre back into English, and the creation of a new version of the English extract based on students’ own ideas.
Creative Translation Student Worksheet – Spanish – Key Stage 3-4:
This worksheet is designed for independent study and is centered on the use of synonyms in translation. Students are encouraged to write down or look up synonyms in both English and Spanish. The main activity involves comparing two translations of three sentences from Jane Eyre to spot where the translators have chosen different words.
Creative Translation Workshop – Spanish – Key Stage 5:
This workshop focuses on an extract towards the end of Jane Eyre, when Mr Rochester is attempting to save his household from a fire at Thornfield Hall. The workshop includes a comparison of three different Spanish translations, the production of a literal English translation based on one Spanish extract, and the creation of a new English version of the extract in either a formal or informal voice.
Creative Translation Student Worksheet – Spanish – Key Stage 5:
This worksheet is designed for independent study. Students will explore the characters of Mr Rochester and Bertha in Jane Eyre through an English extract and a Spanish book cover. They will then translate a Spanish version of this extract back into English with the help of a glossary. Finally, they will use this literal translation as a template to rewrite the extract from a new perspective.
