Has been translating prolifically from French and English since the 1980s. Won the Zuger translation prize in 1999 for her translation of John Cowper Powys’ Weymouth Sands, the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt prize in 2001 (in particular for her translations of works by A.S. Byatt), and a literary grant in 2005 from the City of Munich for her translation of texts by Marcel Proust. She received the City of Munich translation prize the same year. Mainly translates living authors, but has translated Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen and Dickens.
