Extract: Chapter 35: Jane supernaturally hears Mr. Rochester’s voice
When Jane Eyre grows up, she becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall to a child called Adele. While at Thornfield, Jane falls in love with her employer – Edward Rochester. Despite Rochester loving Jane back, there are many obstacles to their love, and eventually Jane runs away from Thornfield. After becoming homeless and sick, Jane is taken in by the Rivers family, who – in a bizarre twist of fate – turn out to be her long-lost cousins! St John Rivers asks Jane to marry him and join him in his missionary work abroad. Jane considers accepting but has a supernatural experience in which she hears Rochester’s voice calling her name over the moors. She feels that she must return to her true love – Rochester!
