Key Stage 3/S1-3

Extract: Chapter 2: locked in the red-room

At the beginning of the novel, we meet Jane Eyre – a young orphan being raised by her cruel aunt, Mrs Reed. Jane’s cousins – Mrs Reed’s children – are also unkind towards Jane. After a fight with her cousin, John Reed, Jane is imprisoned in the red-room as a punishment. Jane is terrified of being left in the red-room because it is supposedly haunted by the ghost of her dead uncle. While locked in, Jane believes she sees her uncle’s ghost, screams and faints.
