A Jew who fled from Germany to Switzerland in 1933. Studied music with the aim of becoming a conductor. Was interned on the outbreak of war and undertook forced labour. Used inherited money to set up his own publishing business in 1945, specialising in little-known authors. The business went bankrupt in the mid-1970s and he then turned to translating (from French and English) and reviewing.
